Mexico: Energinet.dk and CENACE initiate co-operation in Mexico

On the 25th of February, 2015 the National Energy Control Center (CENACE) and the Danish Transmission System Operator (Energinet.dk) met in Mexico city to initiate a new co-operation on the Integration of Renewable Energy in the Mexican Power System. This cooperation forms part of the Climate Change Mitigation and Energy program between the Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources and the Secretariat of Energy (SEMARNAT and SENER) of the United Mexican States and the Government of Denmark which was signed last summer and runs from 2014-2017.

Energinet.dk is CENACEs counterpart in Denmark and the purpose of this peer to peer cooperation is to promote information sharing, best practices, and knowledge transfer between the Parties to support the development of cost efficient integration of renewable energy in the power system.

A Letter of Intent is being negotiated and we hope the partnership will foster networks between the Parties to identify and resolve day to day challenges associated with the integration of variable sources of renewable energy in power systems.

The form of cooperation will include:

• exchange of information, experience and documentation;
• international visits, secondments and delegations involving policymakers, technical experts and academic institutions; and
• joint organization and participation in seminars, workshops, training activities and meetings to share information and practices associated with integrating renewable energy in the power system.

“Energinet.dk is among the best in World at integrating wind energy into the power system. In Denmark wind turbines reached a record level in 2014 covering 40% of the average electricity consumption. Mexico is planning to increase its wind capacity almost threefold before 2018, and we are happy to enter into a close co-operation with Denmark on this important topic” says President of CENACE Ingeniero Eduardo Meraz.

Energinet.dk is an independent non-profit enterprise owned by the Danish Ministry of Climate, Energy and Building. Energinet.dk is responsible for Denmark’s security of supply for electricity and gas and owns the Danish transmission grids – the energy “highways”. CENACE is the independent system operator for the Mexican electricity network and will be responsible for operating the new wholesale electricity market in Mexico.
