South Africa: Danish Minister Meeting Partners in the Danish – South African Energy Sector Programme

Danish Minster for Climate, Energy and Building, visited South Africa and discussed the energy sector programme during meetings with South African partners

The Danish – South African energy sector programme was discussed during a meeting between the Danish minister and representatives from the South African Department of Energy, SANEDI and ESKOM.

ESKOM Interested in Closer Cooperation with Denmark
The Danish Minister met with ESKOM Group Executive Steve Lennon who expressed interest in a closer cooperation with Denmark through the Danish South African energy sector programme. ESKOM is interested in expanding their investments in renewable energy and Lennon pointed at the possibility to learn from Danish utilities. South Africa has a significant potential for improving the efficiency of their coal fired power plants. The country remains heavily dependent on coal. Danish expertise in clean technologies and models for regulating reserve capacity could help make the South African power generation more efficient and flexible.

Further development of a wind atlas to map wind resources in South Africa is one of the components in the Danish - South African energy sector programme. The South African Department of Energy is positive towards increased use of the data from the wind atlas in their energy planning.
