Empower selected as the main contractor for the Ajos wind farm in Kemi

OX2 and Empower PN Oy have signed an agreement on the dismantling of old wind turbines and the construction of the site for 13 new turbines in the Ajos wind farm in Kemi. The agreement will further strengthen Empower's position as the leading wind power service provider in Finland.

“By repowering the existing wind turbines and installing three new ones, the electricity production at Ajos will be more than doubled. Ajos is a semi- offshore site which offers great wind speeds but also requires more demanding construction work compared to ordinary sites. We needed an experienced and skillful partner for site works and therefore selected Empower as the main contractor”, emphasises Teemu Loikkanen, Country Director of OX2.

“As eight wind turbines will be built on artificial islands, this will be an exceptionally challenging construction site. This is a significant indication of trust towards Empower’s expertise and operational ability”, says Juha Lamberg, Vice President of Empower PN Oy.

After Ajos wind farm is renewed and operational by the end of 2017 it will generate approximately 160 GWh wind power, which is equivalent to the annual electricity needs of approximately 32 000 households.The wind farm has a total output of approximately 42 MW.

The agreement consists of dismantling the old offshore and onshore infrastructure and the construction of new roads, lifting platforms, foundations, medium voltage network and communications network.

The design project is in progress and construction will be started in stages in spring. Main part of the construction works will be finalised by the end of 2016.
