I’ve noticed that companies are relying more on telecommuting, outsourcing and geographically dispersed offices. How is this trend affecting the way businesses operate? What are some of the key benefits pushing this trend, and what are some of the problems that it causes?

Collaborating in networked and distributed teams is quite new to many companies, although these concepts have been around already for decades. We see that during the past years even those more traditional organizations with quite fixed processes are now finding out new ways of managing collaboration.

Of course the hype of social media has caused many organizations to jump that bandwagon. 2011 will be the year that organizations stop piloting and move to deciding how to implement enterprise 2.0 across their operations, both internally and externally with customers and partners.

The benefits differ per organziation. All in all we see that people who embrace the new ways of working are becoming more agile and effective. Collaborating should also be fun, lets not forget that. We have seen that when using the right solution the distributed collaboration can be more effective than face to face teamwork.

Resistance to change is the biggest challenge we come across. People are used to manage all projects by email, shared document folders and process centric task lists. They know it is not the most efficient way to collaborate but they are used to doing it. Only on the long run it’s possible to see what really makes teamwork more effective.
