Total transports in the Port of Naantali over 7.57 million tonnes in 2019

A total of over 7.57 million tonnes of cargo was transported through the Port of Naantali’s quays and/or fairways and water areas maintained by it (incl. transports to and from the oil refinery) in 2019. The total transport volume (loaded + unloaded) in the port area was down by 3% compared to the previous year.

The share of the Naantali inner harbour Kantasatama and Luonnonmaa port site of the total transports was a little over 38%, or a total of around 2.91 million tonnes, of which the share of international transports was 94%. The cargo volume transported through the said areas of the port was up by around 2% which is around 46,000 tonnes more compared to the previous year.

Transports of the Neste oil refinery and oil harbour accounted for nearly 62% of the total transport volume of the Port of Naantali and stood at around 4.66 million tonnes, which in turn was down by 6% or over 312,000 tonnes on the previous year. International transports accounted for nearly 63% of the transports of the oil refinery and domestic for 37%.

The share of international transports was nearly 75% of the total transport volume in the Naantali port area, totalling around 5.67 million tonnes, and the share of domestic transports (including ro-ro traffic between Naantali and Långnäs, Åland islands, and coastal traffic mainly related to distribution of fuel) was 25%, or nearly 1.90 million tonnes.

Of the total transport volume, export shipments stood at around 1.75 million tonnes (+13%) and imports at 3.93 million tonnes (-5.5%). Incoming domestic transports totalled around 0.64 million tonnes (+5.6%) in the Naantali port area, and outgoing domestic shipments totalled 1.26 million tonnes (-18%).

Vessel size is growing

The number of vessel calls in the Port of Naantali totalled 1,505 in 2019, which was 75 vessel calls less compared to 2018. The vessels were, however, larger on average, and they carried more cargo. The total net tonnage of the vessels was over 11.6 million NT (+3%), while it stood at 11.2 million NT a year before.

The number of vessel calls in Kantasatama and Luonnonmaa port site totalled 1,201, which was 70 vessel calls less compared to 2018. The total net tonnage of the vessels that carried cargo through the inner harbour and Luonnonmaa was, however, over 9.78 million NT (+5%), or nearly 0.46 million NT up on the previous year.

The number of vessel calls in the oil harbour was 312, which was one vessel call less compared to a year before. The total net tonnage of the vessels that called in the oil harbour stood at around 1.85 million NT (-4%) and was around 0.7 million NT lower compared to 2018.

Truck and trailer traffic on ferries decreased slightly, but passenger volume grew

A total of 143,036 units of trucks, trailers and different other heavy vehicle combinations were transported by ferry through the Port of Naantali in 2019, down by around 3%, or 3,714 units, on the previous year.

Different vehicles arriving in or departing from the Port of Naantali on Roro and Ropax vessels carried over 1.95 million tonnes (-4%) of cargo, down by around 0.09 million tonnes on the previous year. Of the above cargo volume, tank transports of dangerous goods accounted for nearly 0.15 million tonnes, up by 6% on the previous year.

A total of 193,371 people (+3%) travelled on Ropax vessels via the Port of Naantali, of which 72,507 (+10%) were leisure passengers.

Dry bulk cargo increased and liquid bulk cargo decreased

The volume of dry bulk cargo transported via the Port of Naantali in 2019 totalled over 0.88 million tonnes, up by nearly 24%, or 0.17 million tonnes on the previous year. Bulk products involve strong fluctuation by year and season – both up and down.

Wood chips will increasingly replace coal in the raw material shipments needed for heat production in TSE’s multi-fuel power plant located next to the port. A conveyor for transferring the wood chips between the power plant and the port was introduced in late 2018. The conveyor is part of a project during which the power plant will be gradually converted to use only biofuels instead of coal. In 2019, coal imports totalled around 0.22 million tonnes, down by nearly 0.06 million tonnes or around 20% on the previous year. On the other hand, imports of wood chips, to replace coal, totalled nearly 0.18 million tonnes, up by over 0.16 million tonnes on the previous year.

Grain transports (incl. corn) totalled over 0.22 million tonnes in 2019. The volume of grain transports increased by 25% or nearly 0.05 million tonnes on the previous year. Of dry bulk goods, the volume increased in recycled glass (+372%), totalling around 0.06 million tonnes.

A total of nearly 4.75 million tonnes of liquid bulk cargo was transported through the Port of Naantali’s quays and/or fairways and water areas maintained by it in 2019, down by 7% on the previous year. The majority, around 97.8%, of that volume was transport to and from the Naantali oil refinery.
