Press release -

Fjällräven Polar 2016 has begun

32 ‘ordinary’ people from around the world are now embarking on the journey of a lifetime. The 300km-long Fjällräven Polar dog-sled event has now started. Over the next few days, the participants will travel from Signaldalen in Norway to the forests outside Jukkasjärvi, driving their dog sleds over subarctic tundra.

Guided by legendary musher Kenth Fjellborg and outdoor specialist Johan Skullman, the participants will learn how to drive their own sleds, take care of their dogs and how to deal with the ups and downs of this incredible adventure.

The environment is beautiful, but can be harsh. The participants will cross one of Europe’s largest areas of permafrost, dealing with freezing temperatures and varying landscapes. But the rewards are great and the memories long lasting.

Something that started as a competition…
Fjällräven Polar began in 1997 as a dog-sled race after Fjällräven founder Åke Nordin became inspired by the legendary Iditarod event in Alaska. But after 10 successful years, Fjällräven Polar was placed on ice.

…became a school for outdoor life
But in 2012, Fjällräven Polar was reborn in a new format. The course remained the same, but instead of competing against each other, ‘regular’ people from around the world would learn outdoor knowledge and be inspired to live a more active, outdoor lifestyle.

The idea behind Fjällräven Polar is to demonstrate that anyone can take part in an amazing adventure if they make the right preparations and equip themselves well”, says Andreas Cederlund, Event Manager at Fjällräven.

Fjällräven Polar is open to all and it’s a truly global event. This year, 1,152 people applied from countries including Germany, The US, Estonia, Taiwan, The UK, South Korea and many more. The participants are selected by public voting and jury selection. The applicant who received the most votes this year was Hans Markus Antson from Tallinn with 56,854 votes.
