Prince Daniel visits Gothia Cup this summer

When the Gothia Cup starts on Monday 16 July, Prince Daniel of Sweden will pay a visit to the tournament. – We are very pleased and honoured that Prince Daniel is interested in Gothia Cup. The tournament is basically all about football as a way to create understanding between people regardless of nationality, colour, religion, sex or physical conditions, says Dennis Andersson, General Secretary of the Gothia Cup.

Gothia Cup is the world´s largest sporting event for young people and has this year attracted 1625 teams from 80 nations – new record for the tournament, both in terms of number of teams and number of nations.

– It is obviously very positive that Prince Daniel visits us during the tournament week. It contributes to raise awareness of the possibilities to unite around a common interest in order to bridge differences between people. Moreover, I know that the Prince has a great interest in sports, and here we provide world-class football entertainment, says Dennis Andersson.

During the visit, Prince Daniel will have the opportunity to meet players and officials from various participating countries and get a description of how the tournament has evolved since its inception in 1975 until today. The visit will end with an international friendly game between participants from some of those who made it to the Gothia Cup via the Meet the World - a qualifying tournament held in 24 countries in cooperation with SKF.

Gothia Cup is the world's largest and most international youth football tournament that is being played every year in Gothenburg, Sweden. Gothia Cup was first held in 1975 and today over 35 000 players in 1570 teams from 70 different nations from around the world participates in the tournament. In 2007 Gothia Cup was named by FIFA as The World Youth Cup and in 2010 the tournament was appointed one of the 12 largest Swedish leadership achievements of modern times by the Swedish Centre of Commerce. SKF is the main partner of the Gothia Cup.
