University of Gävle gains right to award research degrees in electrical engineering and industrial engineering and management

“This is a very important step in a larger strategic work to forward our development,” says Magnus Isaksson, professor and project manager for strategic research development at the University of Gävle.

The fact that University of Gävle gains the right to award research degrees in electrical engineering and in industrial engineering and management means that the University now can offer courses and study programmes on all levels from first-cycle to third-cycle.

“External reviews were very positive and the fact that we now have degree-awarding powers for third-cycle qualifications proves that our research environments are strong,” Magnus Isaksson says.

Gaining the right to award research degrees means that the University as a whole improves its status which in turn makes it easier to recruit new doctoral students, keep skilled researchers and attract external projects, according to Magnus Isaksson.

“Our research has expanded amazingly fast and is of the highest quality. We publish our results in top research contexts and world-elite journals. In the last five years, the number of published scientific reports has increased by 62 percent,” Magnus Isaksson says.

Electrical engineering
Electrical engineering is a broad field and the University carries out research within wireless radio, radio frequency measurements, robotics, advanced control systems and signal processing.

Industrial engineering and management
Industrial engineering and management is a technical subject but its focus is on the softer areas. Research areas are, for instance, logistics, innovation and innovation processes.

Education and Research at a Scenic Campus.
The University of Gävle has approximately 17 000 students, more than 50 study programmes and second-cycle programmes, about 1 000 courses in humanities, social and natural sciences and technology.

Research Profiles
Built Environment and Health-promoting Working Life are the general research profiles of the higher education institution. Important parts included are Spatial Planning with a specialisation in Sustainable Built Environment and Musculoskeletal Disorders with the purpose to prevent work-related injuries. In 2010, the higher education institution received permission to carry out third-cycle programmes in the profile area of Built Environment.
The higher education institution has applied for permission to carry out third-cycle programmes in technology, humanities and social sciences.
