Press release -

Record-low prices for high speed broadband in Stockholm

Internet access rates for businesses are lowest in Singapore and Stockholm according to new survey.

Access and rates for high-speed connections are important factors shaping the local business climate. According to an international survey of 11 major business cities, Singapore offers the lowest corporate rates for internet closely followed by Stockholm. Stockholm offers the lowest rate for dark fiber. New York is most expensive.

United Minds has conducted a survey on how much businesses have to pay for 100 Mbit/s bandwidth in 11 cities around the world. The study also includes rental cost for dark fiber connections. The cities are Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Berlin, Helsinki, London, New York, Oslo, Paris, Seoul, Stockholm and Singapore.

High-speed broadband access for companies is cheapest in Singapore, with an average of 378€ per month. Stockholm is second with 565€, followed by the Nordic capitals with 844€ per month and for the European cities 1,611€ per month. In New York the cost is 2,205€ while Seoul have an average of 1,865€. In the rest of Sweden, the average price is 1,033€ per month, according to the magazine Computer Sweden.

- Access and price of fast broadband is one of several factors affecting the business environment, which is particularly important for cities with a high proportion of knowledge-intensive companies. I’m proud of our close collaboration between industry, research and the university that has made Stockholm one of Northern Europe’s most important growth regions, says Mayor Sten Nordin (M), City of Stockholm.

The average price for a 100 Mbit/s connection in the Nordic capitals is 50 percent higher than in Stockholm. In European capitals the average price is almost three times higher, while prices in New York are almost four times higher than in Stockholm.

The results for rental of dark fiber connection exhibited essentially the same pattern as 100 Mbit/s bandwidth. At 317€per month, Stockholm has the lowest rate. In Singapore, which has the lowest price for 100 Mbit/s bandwidth the price of dark fiber is 970€ per month. Second lowest price was found in Helsinki with a cost of 701€ per month followed by Copenhagen at 888€.
Paris 1,334€, London 1,438€ and most expensive was New York with a cost of the entire 4,500€ per month.

- This confirms that when we offer basic IT-infrastructure to all on equal terms, competition gets high and the prices low, says Mayor Sten Nordin (M), City of Stockholm.
