The new Tamron 24-70 F/2.8 G2 with dual micro processing units

Tamron hit the nail on the head when they launched the world’s first 24-70 mm F/2.8 lens with image stabilisation. The lens impressed with its high quality in image and construction, and quickly became a favourite among both hobby and professional photographers. Now Tamron launches version 2 loaded with improvements.

Landscape, portrait, travelling, feature and sports photography – 24-70 mm F/2.8 has many fields of applications thanks to its all-round focal length area and high speed. When a lens like this is also equipped with image stabilization, it becomes even more versatile and enables spontaneous and creative shots in light conditions that would normally require a tripod.

Leading stability in its class

Tamron has put even more focus on the image stabilisation (VC, Vibration Compensation) in the new Tamron SP 24-70mm F/2.8 Di VC USD G2 by equipping the lens with dual micro processing units (MPU). One is responsible for the auto focus, which like before is driven by an Ultrasonic Silent Drive, USD, ensuring excellent focusing speed and accuracy.

The other MPU is dedicated to image stabilization, which is the best in its class, and compensates for up to 5 shutter steps longer than normally possible in free hand photography. The two MPUs combined make the G2 of Tamron’s all-round zoom lens an even stronger lens than the much appreciated predecessor, both when high-speed is required, or for a slower working pace in dark surroundings.

A tough lens in sophisticated design

Just like its siblings in the exclusive SP series, Tamron SP 24-70mm F/2.8 Di VC USD G2 has a new, more stylish look with a sleek black surface. A matt silver colour ring by the mount ads an extra exclusiveness to the lens. The barrel is made of metal and has seals to prevent infiltration of moisture and/or rain drops to provide moisture-resistant construction. The elegant, yet sturdy design gives the lens a clear sense of high quality.

High quality glass materials

The inside of the lens is just as exclusive as the outside. The use of specialized, high quality glass materials assures accurate colour reproduction and superior sharpness, perfect for today’s high-pixel-density cameras. Optical construction (17 elements in 12 groups) uses 2 XR (Extra Refractive Index) elements, 3 LD (Low Dispersion) elements, 3 GM (Glass-Molded aspherical) and one hybrid aspherical lens element. Together they minimize axial chromatic aberrations, transverse chromatic aberrations, spherical aberrations and distortion, and allow a compact design that achieves superior image quality.

Tamron’s eBand coating effectively reduces reflexes and minimizes ghosting and flare, giving the images maximum contrast and colour saturation. The Fluorine coating applied on the front element surface is water and oil repellent and allows safe and easy removal of fingerprints, dirt and smudges.

Improved mechanics

All movable parts of the new lens have been improved, including the zoom mechanism, which has increased the precision of the overall zooming mechanism. An electromagnetic diaphragm system, which has been a standard feature for Canon-mount lenses, is now employed in Nikon-mount lenses. More precise diaphragm and aperture control is possible, which is very practical with both action and video photography.

The lens hood is equipped with a new locking mechanism, which locks it into place to prevent misalignment which might possibly cause vignetting.

Also, Tamron SP 24-70mm F/2.8 Di VC USD G2 is compatible with the optional Tamron Tap-in Console, an optional accessory product that provides a USB connection to a personal computer, enabling users to easily update a lens’s firmware as well as customize features including fine adjustments to the AF and VC.

Availability

Tamron SP 24-70mm F/2.8 Di VC USD G2 is available with mount for Canon and Nikon. Delivery will start during August 2017.
