All the colours in the world

Back in 1976, Jotun launched an innovation that has helped revolutionise the consumer paint market worldwide and give you all the colours in the world. Recently, the more than 40-year-old innovation received yet another update when touch-screens was launched, providing users with updated technology making Multicolor faster and easier to use.

Did you know that back in the 70s, paint was only available in a limited number of ready-mixed colours tinted in the factory? This meant that consumers only had a limited number of colours to choose from.

For Jotun, which prided itself on a wide colour selection, producing and storing so many different ready-mixed paints was expensive and inefficient. The solution seemed simple: What if tinting – the last step in the production process – could be moved from the factory to the shop?

After years of development and bold investments, Jotun launched its first Multicolor machine in 1976. Jotun Multicolor was the first mass-produced in-shop tinting system of its kind, allowing consumers to select an almost infinite array of colours from their local shop.

Perhaps more than any other innovation, Jotun Multicolor has helped drive growth in the Decorative segment, especially overseas, where Jotun was often the first paint manufacturer to introduce in-shop tinting. The concept may be 40 years old, but remains the backbone of the Decorative Paints segment. For this reason, Jotun has continually invested in the further development of the machine, adding new features and utilising the latest technologies - most recently touch-screens - to ensure that Jotun Multicolor remains the “gold standard” in in-shop tinting.
