”The Worse Things Get, The Harder I Fight, The Harder I Fight, The More I Love You” er oppfølgeren til albumet ”Middle Cyclone” (2009) som i sin første uke kapret tredjeplassen på Billboard Top 200 og som fikk Grammy-nominasjoner. NPR beskrev hennes røst som ”en av de mest forførende i musikkverdenen”.

Albumet er delprodusert av Case og innspilt i Tuscon, Portland, Los Angeles og Brooklyn. ”The Worse Things Get, The Harder I Fight, The Harder I Fight, The More I Love You” gjestes av bl.a: M. Ward, Steve Turner, Howie Gelb og medlemmer fra My Morning Jacket, The New Ponographers, Calexico, Los Lobos og Visqueen.
