​Burger King performs epic flame-grilling over 125 ft bonfire

Burger King has been the master of flame-grilling since 1954. To kick off this year’s barbecue season, Burger King Norway set out to perform the most spectacular flame-grilling ever. One lucky guest got a ride of a lifetime when he ordered a Whopper at his local restaurant.

- Since 1954, Burger King has been true to the art of flame-grilled burgers. This year, we took flame-grilling to another level. Our Burger King Team found the perfect flame in Aalesund, Norway; a giant annual bonfire called Slinningsbålet. Just like our famous Whopper®, the Slinningsbålet bonfire is handmade to order. This was a perfect fit, says CEO of Burger King Norway, Rune Sandvik.

Amazing facts about this spectacular Slinningsbålet flame-grilling:

  • The Slinningsbålet bonfire is an annual event in the city of Aalesund in Norway. The bonfire is the world’s largest annual bonfire, attracting thousands of spectators to celebrate midsummer. The bonfire stood a full 125 ft /38 meters tall.
  • Due to safety measures, the final decision to perform the flame-grilling was taken just hours before the bonfire was lit. Aalesund lies on the west coast of Norway, known for extreme weather conditions.
  • The Burger King team had done months of careful planning to ensure they were able to perform it safely, including a full test flight over a smaller bonfire to see how the airflow from the helicopter affected the fire.
  • Thousands of Norwegians gather around bonfires to celebrate Midsummer. The Slinningsbålet bonfire is Norway’s tallest and a more than 100 years old tradition.
  • The Norwegian Royal family was among the spectators.
