You can now travel in Edvard Munch’s footsteps

Edvard Munch had strong ties to a number of places in Norway. The Munch Museum is now launching its own travel guide to make it easy for you to tread in the artist’s footsteps.

Munch often referred to his different residences as «castles» or «châteaux», and with his words as a backdrop the Munch Museum has the pleasure of presenting a complete overview of his many dwellings in Norway. The book «My Castles – a Travel Guide to the Places of Edvard Munch» takes the reader to the places which greatly influenced his life and art.

Ties to many places

During his long career Munch lived – and gained inspiration from – a number of places. His mother’s family came from Fredrikstad and his father’s from Vågå, while the artist himself was born in Løten. Munch also lived at various places in Oslo, including Ekely, and later spent time on Jeløy, in Moss and on the Ramme estate in Hvitsten. He also had strong ties to Åsgårdstrand and Kragerø, where he found inspiration for several well-known works, among them The Girls on the Bridge and The Sun.

Make the journey!

Through text and pictures, the book describes the time Munch spent at his many «castles», and shows how some of his most famous motifs are connected to the various areas. The travel guide is illustrated throughout with Munch’s own artworks and with photographs. In addition, it contains information concerning lookout points and experiences connected to each of Munch’s places, so that you can go where he went and experience the many spots which inspired him throughout a long career.

The book has been developed in cooperation with the “Munch places” through the project ”Edvard Munch – Art and Life”. The book is available in Norwegian and English version.
