International Parental Child Abduction – Bad advice may cost you a lot of money and a lost case

After more than 15 years working with international child abduction cases, I have seen and experienced most things. Many of thechallenges facing the «left behind parent» are common to most cases. Delays and reluctance from local police , choice of lawyers with insufficient interest or competence in this field, as well as long drawn out foreign court cases. You need advice based on your particular case, depending on the country to which the child has been abducted. This is essential in finding the most successful approach.

It is impossible to work with child abduction without being affected by it. I have often felt frustrated by a system that does not function or does not care, that in many cases opposes the parent in their fight to have their child returned. I have had a great many long telephone calls with desperate and distressed parents, who as a result of bad advice and long unsuccessful processes, have to eventually, give up the hope of getting their child home. Many of these cases could have been resolved relatively easily if the parents were given the correct advice and help early in the proceedings.

Speaking from personal experience, I believe that there are only a handful of lawyers with sufficient competence, experience and dedication with regard to international child abduction. As the infamous oil well firefighter Red Adair so eloquently said : "If you think it's expensive to hire a professional to do the job, wait until you hire an amateur".

My best advice to parents whose child has been abducted is to learn as quickly as possible - They are entering a world where everything is turned upside down. Justice? -Forget it. This is about who, what, which, why and how if one is to achieve a successful outcome.

We must not forget that the child is the greatest victim. The child is torn away from family, friends, school, often language and health care and frequently experience constant flight in a country without the same security and social structure as Europe/US. It is a frequent misconception that a child who is with the runaway parent is a safe child.
