Cristina de Middel is this years' Nobel Peace Prize photographer

The award-winning Spanish photographer Cristina de Middel is this years’ Nobel Peace Prize photographer. She will make the Nobel Peace Prize exhibition 2018, together with the Nobel Peace Center team. The Peace Prize laureates Denis Mukwege and Nadia Murad will be opening the exhibition in Oslo on 11 December.

Friday 5 October it was announced that Denis Mukwege and Nadia Murad are awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for 2018. As soon as the announcement was made, the team at the Nobel Peace Center in Oslo started their work with the Peace Prize Exhibition 2018, which will be opened by the laureates themselves on 11 December, the day after the Nobel Ceremony in Oslo. The award-winning Spanish photographer Cristina de Middel has been chosen as the photographer for this years’ exhibition. In the coming weeks, she will meet the two laureates to photograph them and their work and take a photo series about sexual violence as a weapon in war.

Cristina de Middel is a 43-year-old Spanish photographer based in Mexico and Brazil, who worked many years as a photojournalist before she stepped outside the documentary genre and produced photo series like “Afronauts”, exploring the borders between fact and fiction, documentary and imagination.

“We look forward to working together with such an inspiring and creative photographer on this years’ Nobel Peace Prize exhibition,” said Executive Director Liv Tørres. “Sexual violence in war is a challenging subject, and together with Christina de Middel, we will create an engaging exhibition that will expand the audience’s understanding of the topic, and make people understand that sexual violence is something that can be eradicated.”

-I believe that Photography has the potential to raise awareness and provoke empathy, which is the first stage to solve a problem, says Cristina de Middel. Christina de Middel is a Magnum Photo nominee, and has received numerous awards, including PhotoFolio Arles 2012 and the Infinity Award from the International Center of Photography in New York.

The Nobel Peace Prize exhibition 2018 will be officially opened 11 December and opens to the public 12 December at 12:00.
