The Plantagon World Food Building in Linköping Sweden, awarded world prestigious award – The International Architecture Awards 2016

STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN (August 5, 2016) — The International Architecture Awards is the largest and most extensive global architecture awards program in the world, annually honoring new projects that achieve a high standard of excellence in design, construction, planning and sustainability. The Plantagon World Food Building in Linköping Sweden, by Plantagon Agritechture and Sweco Architects, was one of the prominent projects selected by the jury for the prestigious The International Architecture Awards 2016.

”I’m proud and honored that our pioneering work at Plantagon receives a highly regarded award like this”, says Hans Hassle, Secretary-General of Plantagon International Association. “It’s also indeed good timing for us. Spring 2016 we concluded our transformation from being an R&D driven company towards being more design and real estate driven. Introducing technological solutions for feeding the city was our first step. Implementing how to build them into the city infrastructure is what we do now.”

“We describe it as Agritechture”, says Plantagon CEO Owe Pettersson, “a mix of agriculture, technology and architecture. We coordinate many different competencies in this business and I want to send a special thanks to our allies at Sweco, one of the leading sustainable engineering and design firms in Europe. We worked in an alliance since the start of Plantagon 2008 and we share this award with them. Especially the Plantagon Chief Architect Alessio Boco, that leads the architectural design at Sweco Architects, has played a crucial role.”

The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies are the patrons of the awards. Hundreds of submissions were received for this year’s program from architecture firms from across Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Australia, and the Americas. A final shortlist of 370 projects was presented to a Jury of Italian architects and critics. For The International Architecture Awards for 2016 the jury awarded more than 130 new buildings, commercial and institutional developments, landscape architecture, and urban planning projects from 43 nations.

“The selected new buildings and urban planning projects in this year’s edition of The International Architecture Awards demonstrate a new and growing sensitivity to true human-based design and a sympathetic approach to sustainability and the environment,” states Christian Narkiewicz-Laine, Museum President, The Chicago Athenaeum, in a press release.

The 2016 Jury was held in Milan during the Venice Architecture Biennale. The awarded projects will be presented at the Istanbul Design Biennial held October 22 – December 4, 2016. The exhibition “The City and the World” is scheduled to travel in Europe, opening at The European Centre’s Contemporary Space Athens in Athens, Greece in 2017.
