Bildmuseet: Entangle / Physics and the Artistic Imagination

Black holes, dark matter, gravity, space, time and motion – these are phenomena that fascinate scientists and artists alike. Bildmuseet presents Entangle / Physics and the Artistic Imagination; painting, installation, fashion design, sculpture, film, digital artwork and photography inspired by the science which investigates the fundamental forces which shape and govern our world.

Welcome to a press preview of the exhibition on Thursday 15 November at 10:00 (RSVP) and to the opening on the Friday Evening at 17:00-21:00. Preview and opening of Ângela Ferreira’s solo exhibition Pan African Unity Mural on the same occasions.

Entangle / Physics and the Artistic Imagination exhibits works by leading artists drawn from contemporary art and design which are the results of their using the ideas of physics to varying extents and in different ways as springboards of their imaginations and creative practices.

As curator of the exhibition, Bildmuseet has invited Ariane Koek, founder of the Arts at CERN programme at the European Organization for Nuclear Research. A number of the internationally recognised artists in Entanglehave participated in this programme and some of the works have been created especially for the Bildmuseet exhibition.

The participating artists include Julius von Bismarck (Germany), Julian Charrière (Switzerland), Sou Fujimoto (Japan), Iris van Herpen (Netherlands), Ryoji Ikeda (Japan, France), William Kentridge (South Africa), Rafael Lozano-Hemmer (Canada), Goshka Macuga (Poland, UK), Davide Quayola (Italy, UK), Solveig Settemsdal (Norway, UK), Sarah Sze (US), Keith Tyson (UK), Jorinde Voigt (Germany) and Carey Young (US, UK).

Entangle / Physics and the Artistic Imagination is produced by Bildmuseet, Umeå University. The exhibition is accompanied by an audio cloud where five of the artists reflect on Light, Gravity, Matter, Time, and Space side by side with physicists from CERN and Harvard University on the same phenomena.

A catalogue accompanying the exhibition will be published in the spring of 2019 (Hatje Cantz), including essays by the physicist and best-selling author Carlo Rovelli; science journalist Philip Ball; Nicola Triscott, artistic director at Arts Catalyst; the art historian Gavin Parkinson; and Ariane Koek, curator of the exhibition. The catalogue will also feature the reflections of physicists and artists featured in the audio cloud, with an additional reflection on Entropy.

Opening / Friday 16 November 17:00–21:00
The exhibition will be inaugurated at 19:00 by Hans Adolfsson, vice-chancellor at Umeå University with director Katarina Pierre, Bildmuseet. Participating are curator Ariane Koek and physicist Subodh Patil, Niels Bohr Institute, Copenhagen. Also present are fashion designer Iris van Herpen, artists Goshka Makuga, and Julius von Bismarck, as well as the artist Ângela Ferreira, whose solo exhibition Pan African Unity Mural also will be opened this evening.

Bildmuseet exhibits contemporary international art, photography, architecture, design and other forms of visual culture. Existential, political and philosophical issues are key to the programme. Physics and the Artistic Imagination – New book from Bildmuseet

Featuring works by contemporary international artists, essays about physics and art, as well as extracts from conversations between physicists and artists, the book Entangle: Physics and the Artistic Imagination is an introduction to how particle physics is inspiring the work and practice of contemporary artists.
