The most important playlist of the week is released

Today, The most important playlist of the week, is released on Spotify. The playlist, reserved for independent artists, is initiated and curated by Record Union, to give independents a new platform and to challenge the norm of success within the music industry today.

More than two thirds of the listening on Spotify happens via playlists, and to get a track up to one of the streaming services playlists have become crucial for an artist to break today. Although, this seems to be quite hard if you’re an independent artist. In 2017, 85 percent of all tracks streamed on Spotify, were coming from the big labels. 87 percent of all tracks on the platform’s most popular playlist, RapCaviar, were also coming from the three major labels.

- Just uploading a track to one of the streaming services won’t make a music career today. We want to inspire and encourage more music creators to do more music, and in order to do that, we must go beyond distribution to help our users to reach out. Finding your audience is a key driver in today’s music industry, and hopefully The most important playlist of the week could be a helping hand for some artists, says Johan Svanberg, CEO at Record Union.

The most important playlist of the week presents and highlights new music from independent artists. The purpose is to give more music creators an opportunity to be seen and noticed. Hopefully, in the long run, it will also help more music creators to reach their full potential and to make a living out of their music.

- At Record Union we’re not aiming at creating the next superstar, we’re rather aiming at redefining what success is. We want to be an active part in pushing the music industry forward and to make it more available and open to everyone who wants to be a part of it. The most important playlist should be seen a symbol for this, it can’t be a one-winner-takes-it-all-market anymore, says Johan Svanberg.

The most important playlist of the week was released on Spotify at 00.00 CET on Friday the 1st of June 2018. The playlist will be updated with new music from independent artists every Friday, at the same time.
