You might have missed…

If you are planning a trip to the Czech Republic this year you will have probably decided by now which places and visitor attractions you would like to visit. Perhaps you will also find one of the following worth seeing.

In Slavkov near Brno extensive refurbishment of the stables and the cart and carriage storage facilities of the castle is well underway. In February these premises will become a home to the newly launched exposition dedicated to the Battle of Three Emperors and Napoleon´s march through Central Europe. The Slavkov battlefield ranks among the most significant sites of world history and the town of Slavkov by Brno is its symbolic centre. Austerlitz (the German name for Slavkov) is known all over the world as a synonym of triumph, the opposite of Waterloo. Austerlitz attracts visitors and historians interested in this historic époque from all over the world. Visitors to the newly refurbished stables will find many precious exhibits in the glass display cabinets but also arms, helmets and soldiers’ uniforms which they will be able to try on there and then if they wish.

“Technology in the household” is the first ever exposition of its kind in the history of the National Technical Museum and one of only a few exhibitions focused on this subject in Central Europe. The exhibition area encompasses 600 square metres. The exhibition itself focuses on the evolvement of ‘household helpers’ used for hygiene, cleaning, washing, ironing, sewing, altering clothes, cooking and many other aspects.  Visitors will be able to view exhibits illustrating how these appliances have developed across the globe from the second half of the 19^th Century until the end of the 20^th.

A new exhibition dedicated to the Klatovy Catacombs has been installed in the original premises of the crypts and Jesuit Secondary School. Visitors will be able to learn more about the story of Baroque Jesuit Klatovy. On display are period documents, historical objects, models of buildings and documentary films. The exhibition utilises some multimedia features as well. The Klatovy Catacombs won the 5th edition of the “My homeland in the heart of Europe – discover and protect it” competition.

The Turold Cave is located in the nature park of the Turold Hill on the northern edge of the town of Mikulov and together with the Fox Hole cave (Liščí díra) it forms an almost 3 kilometre long labyrinth of corridors, halls and domes. Instead of stalactites and stalagmites its white walls are decorated by truly unique “Turold formations” which cannot be found in any other cave in the Czech Republic. The Turold Cave is also the only cave from the Mesozoic Era open to the public. New for this season will be night tours of the cave during the summer months of July and August. The town of Mikulov itself is also working on a new service for this season in the form of a mobile guide. The guide will take visitors through the history of the town, will introduce architectural monuments, museums and galleries. It will also invite the visitors to the regular cultural events or give tips for active holidays in Mikulov and its surroundings. The app which will be launched on March 1 in Czech, English and German also contains practical information about parking, cash machines, contact details of tourist attractions and important telephone numbers.
