Transition to a bioeconomy - a Nordic perspective

The Finnish Government has recognized bioeconomy and clean technologies as one of the spearheads in its governmental program. A Nordic cooperation would benefit actions and activities in the global export markets where competition is fierce. The Stockholm-based think tank Global Challenge and Pohjola-Norden is organizing a seminar on Nordic perspectives on how to implement the transition to bioeconomy. Minister of Economic Affairs Olli Rehn will be the keynote speaker.

– The Finnish bioeconomic approach is an inspiration to Sweden and the other Nordic countries, we want to listen and spread further. One of the key issues in managing global climate change is to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. Wood and a bioeconomy plays a central role, says Johan Hassel, CEO of Global Challenge.

The transition to a bio-based economy presents great opportunities in reducing dependence on fossil fuels, and achieving the EU’s targets for renewable energy and reduces greenhouse gas emissions. The International Energy Agency has shown that the Nordic economies are 25 years ahead of the rest of the world when it comes to energy production and CO2 emissions. Will the Nordic Energy cooperation continue to contribute to the Nordic industries efforts to commit to the 2 degree goal? With the right policy framework, we can strengthen our competitiveness, create green jobs, and contribute to a more sustainable future. These are some of the key questions to be addressed during the seminar.

Amongst the speakers are Karl Henrik Sundström, CEO of Stora Enso, Mika Aho, Managing Director Public Affairs in ST1 Nordic Oy, Janne Laine Dean, Professor Aalto University’s School of Chemical Technology and Hans Jörgen Koch, Director at Nordic Energy Research.
