World premiere 15 March: Political poetry and explosive energy from Marina Mascarell and Hofesh Shechter

Life’s a show with GöteborgsOperans Danskompani will be an evening of contrasts. A luminous world premiere which combines the political, intimate poetry of Marina Mascarell with the explosive energy of the unpredictable Hofesh Shechter.

Katrín Hall, Artistic Director of GöteborgsOperans Danskompani is very proud to present the choreographers behind the pieces in Life’s a show: the poetic rebel Marina Mascarell and the compassionately explosive Hofesh Shechter.

"While Hofesh  begins each new creation by starting from zero with the dancers in the rehearsal room – leaving it with a miracle, the other has spent about a year on thematic research to create her amazing piece. One of the creations focuses on the individual, the other on the collective. However, both pieces unite in their urgency; they reflect our society and human behavior", says Katrín Hall

Based at Sadler’s Wells in London, Israeli-British choreographer Hofesh Shechter is one of the world’s most celebrated choreographers – impossible to predict but with an unmistakable style. His choreography is anarchic, explosive and masterful – yet also tender, compassionate and vibrant. He blends satire with depth, chaos with order and primal, animal drives with human longing.

Contemporary Dance will be his first work for GöteborgsOperans Danskompani. A fun, dynamic, explosive and very physical piece. Club feeling on the Main Stage performed by some of the best dancers on the planet. The multi-talented Shechter is not only choreographer but also the creator of the piece’s music and costumes (together with Osnat Kelner).

Having met the dancers for an introductory exchange, I found them to be one of the most talented and adaptable groups of dancers on the planet. I look forward to pushing their physicality and having them push my creativity to new places”, Hofesh said before rehearsals began.

The Spanish choreographer Marina Mascarell was praised for her 2015 creation Mongrel with GöteborgsOperans Danskompani. She approaches her subjects like a scientist in order to create political, intimate poetry. In Valley she explores how we live our lives playing roles according to patterns we have learnt – in gender roles, rituals and almost everything we do. The commissioned music, which adds to the mysterious and intriguing atmosphere, is by the critically-acclaimed composer and musician Ben Frost.

For Marina Mascarell the body is political: “The body is the rebel, it’s the only thing that is not yet colonized. Our brains are corrupted. We live in a world where we’ve been rejecting our bodies for centuries. In such a world it is revolutionary to focus on the body”, she says.
