Välkommen till vernissage: The Green Room

Gustavsbergs Konsthall presenterar stolt en extra sommarutställning: The Green Room.

What is it about the Wizard of Oz that keeps drawing us back?

It seemed to be on every Christmas and to last for hours, but each time it gave something else. Was it the jolt as the screen went from black and white to colour, the blend of homely comfort and disturbing flying monkeys, or the blend of characters on the yellow brick road, each of whom brought a different aspect to the experience of journeying to somewhere unknown?

One of the fundamentals of research is to have a research question at the heart of a project. While the journey may be circuitous and lead to any number of dead ends, without that focused quest for knowledge, we might never know when we are getting towards the emerald city. Mirroring Dorothy and her friends' realisation that the great Oz is nothing more than a man behind a curtain, as we pursue knowledge and look for ever deeper understanding we begin to realise that for nearly all questions in the arts and humanities, the answer will probably be 'maybe, sometimes, possibly'.

Complicated questions rarely result in simple answers. Practice based research in the arts is a relatively new field and with each new research project, the field gets mapped in a more comprehensive way for those researchers following. There are any number of possible paths to take, but hopefully they will all lead to the same place - a better understanding of ourselves and our world.

There really is no place like home.
