The Danish election: Posts about Lars Løkke Rasmussen dominates the political blogosphere

Kairos Future has tracked the political discussion among roughly 25 000 active bloggers in Denmark and 1,2 million blog posts have been analyzed. The results show that Lars Løkke Rasmussen is mentioned 27 percent more often in the Danish political blogosphere than his strongest opponent Helle Thorning-Schmidt. The overall most popular topic in the Danish political blogosphere is the two opponents.

Discussing the whereabouts and political ideas of politicians seem to be the key concern of Danish bloggers. However, when comparing the discussions about prime opponents in the race, Lars Løkke Rasmussen and Helle Thorning-Schmidt, it is obvious that they are discussed in different contexts. The most frequent topic associated with Rasmussen in the blogosphere is the economy, while for Thorning-Schmidt the most frequently associated topic is her husband Stephen Kinnock.

– What we find most interesting is that individual politicians seem more important than the actual politics, says Mats Lindgren, founder and CEO of Kairos Future. This shows how important persons have become in politics, especially to younger people, who are frequent bloggers. The economy, being one of the key issues in the political debate, is also reflected in the blogosphere. Immigration is a far less important issue to bloggers in the discussions leading to the election, which might indicate that many voters are becoming tired of debating that topic.
