Different stages of remembering and forgetting in Danae Valenza’s MFA exhibition at Galleri Konstfack

Welcome to The Windows Became A Glass Drum

at Galleri Konstfack, vernissage Thursday 5 March, 5–8 pm

In 1963, the prolific jazz pianist Mal Waldron suffered from a near-fatal breakdown that catastrophically wiped his memory and ability to play piano. His skills were regained by listening to his own records, and relearning his entire oeuvre.
The Windows Became A Glass Drum fuses the narratives of Waldron, the artist, and two pianists, each at different stages of remembering and forgetting ‘All Alone’, the title track of Waldron’s post recovery record.

Featuring Felicia Nielsen and Sue Tenander. Camera: Alex Rosenlund

The exhibition is open 6–14 March, weekdays at 12–6, weekends 12–4 pm

Artist bio: Danae Valenza’s practice sits between sound and image, interpreting the affective qualities of listening and musicality, while still remaining connected to the visual experience. Her works refer to linguistic, social or cultural contexts embedded in a site or material, with a keen sense for conceptually-driven mediums and meaningful materiality through light, sound, film, objects, sculpture and text. Valenza prepares momentary encounters of poetic resistance, bringing attention to the inherent sense of agency that viewers and participants bring to her work.

She has exhibited work at Konsthall C (SWE), The Italian Cultural Institute (SWE), HangmenProjects (SE), Govett-Brewster Museum (NZ), Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, Museum of Contemporary Art (AU), Nieuwe Vidé (NED), Ian Potter Museum of Art, VCA Margaret Lawrence, at artist run institutions Westspace, Firstdraft, Blindside, Seventh and festivals: Liquid Architecture, Dance Massive, and Next Wave.

Danae Valenza holds a BFA (First Class Honours) from Monash University, Melbourne and is currently participating in a Master of Fine Arts degree at Konstfack University, Stockholm.
