Konsthantverkarna proudly presents our member SAM STIGSSON at SOFIERO

The Konsthantverkarna crafts association was founded in 1951 and has made a name for itself by first-rate, innovative design. In the summer of 2012 (from May 17th to August 26th) you will be able to admire the group’s contemporary crafts in the Orangery at Sofiero Palace, once a summer residence of Swedish royalty (http://www.sofiero.se/).

Sam Stigsson’s lively corner in the Orangery

The corner in the Orangery withSam Stigsson’s birds, butterflies and other creatures from nature brings us the lively atmosphere that Swedish summer is all about.

“I take input from everything in nature, spring and autumn are a charger of batteries – that's when the birds pass the country, summer is very much for gardening and contemplating, seeking new ideas”, saysSam Stigsson.

Sam Stigssongraduated from Konstfack,Stockholmin 1972. His background as a tailor and a shoemaker enriched him with a great knowledge of very diverse materials and techniques. With just a few machines Sam creates work in mainly reused materials – old newspapers, waste wood etc. He uses papier mâché when creating hens, blackbirds and other birds; old newspapers and shoe boxes, glued together becomes the body and the beak is made out of a piece of wood. Sam is a bird watcher and his birds are anatomically correct and painted so they look almost alive. Their unique expressions and special finishes have made them well-known for a wide audience.

People have forgotten about concrete as a material to create art with, but in the last years artists have discovered that concrete is both beautiful and somewhat luxurious in its simplicity. When Sam works with concrete sculptures he first makes a model in clay. The silicone is then used to create a mold, in which concrete is casted. After the object is taken from the mold, it should be processed, cleaned and sanded until it "feels right". Among others concrete creatures and objects he creates birdbaths as well.

His work is represented at theRöhsskaMuseumin Göteborg and can be seen at Telia inNacka, and at the entrance of Globen.

Everyday items, exclusive objects and conceptual crafts made from cement, glass, ceramics, metal and textiles designed by 85 Konsthantverkarna’s artists presented in an equally seductive environment makes for the perfect combination. "We will follow the season and reinforce its color and atmosphere", explains Åsa Lockner, curator at Konsthantverkarna.

The exhibited items are for sale.
