Redraw the opera map for the future with the new master programme "Creating New Opera"

Are you a professional composer or instrumentalist with a Bachelor's Degree in music? Do you want to redraw the opera map and take opera into the future? Apply to the new and unique multi-disciplinary master programme "Creating New Opera" – a collaboration between Stockholm University of the Arts and the Royal College of Music in Stockholm (KMH).

The programme will bring together students from various disciplines within opera, music and performing arts and is aimed at those with the desire of taking opera into the future. You may be a composer, instrumentalist, stage designer, librettist/playwright, costume designer, opera singer, lighting designer, mask and wig designer or a director, but do not necessarily have to have previous experience working with opera.

Under the supervision of professors and senior lecturers from the various departments and external experts, you will develop collaborative methods and also sharpen your own ability to creatively contribute to the creation of new opera.

Throughout the programme, you will work both practically and theoretically with opera through laboratories and seminars. The practical elements will take place in collaborative forms and are characterised by a non-hierarchical approach that emphasises the exchange of knowledge between the various disciplines.

The programme aims to broaden the concept of what opera and performing arts can be. As a second-cycle programme, it lays the groundwork for future artistic research.

As a composer, you are curious to explore new forms of musical drama in collaboration with others.

Since the training is built around laboratory exercises, you should be able to produce musical material fairly quickly by, for example, working with sketches, graphic scores, mixed forms between composed and improvised or otherwise. If you work with electro-acoustic music, the same applies; you must be able to produce sketches and materials fairly quickly from the laboratory work. Mixing instrumentally and vocally with electro-acoustic elements is also possible.

As an instrumental performer you are welcome to apply with any instrument as your main instrument. You enjoy experimenting and trying out new expressions and forms. You have good music-reading ability and are prepared to improvise on the basis of given frameworks such as a graphic score or given sounds. Maybe you are a creative interpreter yourself.
