Mining in the Barents Region Discussion Topic at Euro Mine Expo

The first speaker to take the podium during this interesting afternoon at Euro Mine Expo will be Lars Carnerud. He will present the Rönnbäcken Nickel Project, which is currently producing one of the world’s highest grades of nickel concentrate.

Carnerud holds an MSc in Mining Engineering from the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden. He has acquired both extensive and varied experience while working for the Boliden Group.

He began his career in 1970 as a mining engineer at Boliden's Laisvall mine. He later moved on to become mine manager at the large Zinkgruvan lead, zinc and silver mine, where he was tasked with overseeing a 100-per cent increase in mine output. Carnerud also joined the newly-established Boliden trading arm as a trader of base metal concentrates. He later assumed the role of project executive at Boliden International, where he was charged with evaluating prospective global mining projects.
In 1989 he was appointed managing director of Saudi Company for Precious Metals (SCPM). A joint venture between Boliden and Petromin, Carnerud was responsible for establishing SCPM as the first private mining company in Saudi Arabia. Thereafter, his roles at Boliden encompassed business development, marketing and sales, and strategy.

As project executive, he also assessed the potential of mine project investments in CIS countries. Carnerud has also held the position of managing director (markets), during which time he oversaw raw material purchases, as well as the sale of Boliden Rönnskär Works' metal products, including copper, lead, zinc, precious metals and acid. Toward the end of his career, while based at Boliden's headquarters in Stockholm, Carnerud joined the company's strategy team, within which he assumed responsibility for raw materials and metals markets and for metal prices.

Now, at Euro Mine Expo, Carnerud will discuss the Rönnbäcken Nickel Project; a large nickel sulphide project in Sweden with a significant production of high-grade magnetite concentrate as a by-product.

"The recently updated PEA (Preliminary Economic Assessment) by SRK Consulting confirms value growth and a competitive cash cost", says Carnerud. He also confirms that a mine concession application for the third deposit, known as "Sundsberget", has been filed.

Morten Often is a geologist and holds a MSc degree from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). Often joined coal mining company Store Norske Spitsbergen Kulkompani AS in 2010 as VP of Exploration and CEO for Store Norske Gull AS, their metal exploration subsidiary. Often came to the company from the Geological Survey of Norway with 33 years of professional experience in mineral resource geology behind him, including 25 years' experience in management roles and 24 years' experience of extensive international cooperation.

Under the heading " Coal and Gold in the Arctic – Store Norske’s Mining and Exploration Activity”, Often will present the mining group that constitutes Scandinavia's only coal producer and that operates the world's northernmost mining project. He will present a history and explain how it is possible to run a profitable mining operation in the Arctic – an area which it could be argued is subject to the world's toughest environmental laws.

"I will also talk about what we do to ensure we have a resource base we can work from in the future, prospecting for coal, gold and other mineral resources on Svalbard and the mainland. Mining and prospecting along the 78th parallel north is challenging, exciting and incredibly beautiful," says Often.

In addition, Tuesday afternoon will include a lecture entitled "Gold-mining in Finnish Lapland – the Kittilä Mine and its Impact on the Community" by Ingmar Haga, Vice President, Europe, Agnico-Eagle Mines Limited, Finland and another entitled "Nussir ASA – the Frontrunner in the New Norwegian Mining Industry" by Øystein Rushfeldt, CEO, Nussir ASA, Norway.

The expo will also welcome participants from Russia. Nikolay Philippov, Director, State Company Mineral will hold a talk on the theme "Mineral Raw Material Resources of the Ore Deposits of North-west Russia".

"Nikolay Philippov will provide an important and interesting perspective on how Russian companies view being part of the European mining industry," says Lennart Gustavsson, Chairman of Georange.
