#1 NEEDLE PUNCHED FELT - Series: How other industries use it.

In our Nonwoven Inspiration Series, we look at how nonwovens are used in different industries. Here is a closer look at needle punched felt. Needle punched felt is widely used in beds, furniture, filters and auto for its soft, mouldable and airy properties. It is often used as a stronger replacement for spunbond or as a cheaper alternative to fabrics.

General properties of needle punched felt

  • Soft
  • Can be made stiff
  • High air permeability
  • High particle absorption
  • Environmentally friendly
  • Can be made resistant depending on which material is used

Used in Furniture & bed

Needle punched felt is used by bed and furniture manufacturers to protect the inner design and as a dust cover. Springs in bed and seating furniture can be wrapped in needle punched felt to make sure they don’t rip other soft components. This also keep dust away and dampens the sound from the springs. Needle punched felt can also be used for inside bed/furniture layers or backings not visible to the eye.

Needle punched felt is often a cheaper alternative to fabrics – but slightly more luxurious and costly than spunbond, which is a nonwoven also often used for beds and furniture.

For Filtration

Because of its great air permeability and good dust absorption, needle punched felt is excellent for air filtration. It has a high level of particle absorption and the material can be adapted for different particle sizes.

Auto industry

It can also be coated with leather or other material to create a more luxurious touch.

And it is also used in the car seats, as a spring cover or in inner seat layers.
