Almedalen 2016: Nordic energy cooperation – what’s the next step?

The International Energy Agency have shown that the Nordic economies are 25 years ahead of the rest of the world when it comes to energy production and CO2 emissions. Will the Nordic Energy cooperation continue to contribute to the Nordic industries efforts to commit to the 2 degree goal?

Climate mitigation is not only about the magnitude of the global emission reductions achieved, but also about the speed of that reduction process. Approximately half of the reduction has to be done before 2030. The Nordic countries have all set out ambitious long-term decarbonising targets i.e. becoming carbon-neutral by 2050 at the latest. The actual global development with regards to CO2 reductions is, however, far from satisfactory. The IEA and NEF have shown that the strong Nordic economies (taken together they would constitute number 12 in the Global Economy), when it comes to energy production and CO2 emissions, are 25 years ahead of the rest of the world. With access to both “clean” electricity and biomass for biofuel, the Nordic business are in a favourable position to create first mover advantages in the carbon neutral transformation.
