Press conference with Dr. Denis Mukwege in Stockholm

Dr. Denis Mukwege, world renowned advocate for women´s rights in DR Congo, who last Thursday survived a murder attempt, is right now in Sweden. A press conference will be held by Dr. Mukwege, Swedish Pentecostal Movement and PMU in Stockholm on Thursday at 10.30 A.M. (CET +1) It will be streamed through www.pmu.se

 Dr. Denis Mukwege is the founder and medical director of Panzi Hospital in Bukavu, DRC. The hospital has become known worldwide for the treatment of survivors of sexual violence and women in need of specialized gynecological care. Dr. Denis Mukwege has been the recipient of numerous international awards, including UN Human Rights Prize. He has been nominated several times for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Last Thursday a murder attempt was committed towards Dr. Denis Mukwege, who narrowly escaped. The news received attention all over the world and was condemned by Ban Ki-moon, Secretary General of the UN, along with many others. In the press conference Dr. Mukwege will share his opinion on the sitaution in the country.

 - Dr. Mukwege is in Sweden together with his family to rest and regain strength after the murder attempt last Thursday, says Niclas Lindgren, director of PMU. The well-being and protection of the family is a top priority for us.

The Swedish Pentecostal Movement and its development and relief agency PMU has a longstanding collaboration with Dr. Denis Mukwege and the Panzi Hospital, owned by its partner church CEPAC.

PMU is the main implementing partner in providing assistance to survivors of sexual violence and women in need of specialized gynecological care. Together with CEPAC, PMU is implementing a number of development- and humanitarian programs in the region.

 Dr. Mukwege is a tireless advocate for the rights of women in DRC. He has addressed the United Nations General Assembly on the matter, most recently in September, and he regularly travels abroad raising awareness of the situation in Eastern DRC. In addition to his responsibilities managing and administering Panzi Hospital and Panzi Foundation, Dr. Mukwege continues to see patients and perform surgery.

 For more than 40 years PMU has developed cooperation with local Pentecostal churches in Sweden and in developing countries, as well as with other development organizations in both the public and private sectors.PMU manages international development efforts funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) and The European Commission’s Humanitarian Aid department (ECHO).
