En Galen Dröm - en dokumentär om Project Playground

Är fritid och lek en viktig del för att ge utsatta barn och unga möjlighet till en bättre framtid? Det var Sofia Hellqvists och Frida Vesterbergs övertygelse när de startade Project Playground för att hjälpa utsatta barn i en av Sydafrikas kåkstäder. Den 16 december kl. 21.00 på TV3 sänds en timmes dokumentär om organisationen där tittarna får följa resan från en galen dröm till verklighet tillsammans med Renée Nyberg.

Sydafrika är det rikaste landet i Afrika och ett populärt turistmål, men är också ett av de mest ojämlika länderna i hela världen med miljontals föräldralösa barn. Det socialt och ekonomiskt utsatta området Langa är den äldsta kåkstaden i Västra Kapprovinsen, och 50 % av dess befolkning är under 18 år. Området har stora problem med barnhushåll, fattigdom, arbetslöshet, gangsterism och drog- och alkoholmissbruk. Våld i hemmet och sexuella övergrepp är utbrett, vilket leder till tonårsgraviditeter och dysfunktionella familjer. Barn som växer upp i Langa tvingas hantera svåra problem dagligen – ofta på egen hand.

Under volontärperioder i bland annat Ghana och i Sydafrika såg Sofia Hellqvist och Frida Vesterberg ineffektiviteten i många organisationers sätt att arbeta. De ville göra verklighet av barns rättigheter och för att gå från artikel till action beslutade de sig för att starta sin egen verksamhet. Målet var att kunna erbjuda en trygg fristad där barn och unga kunde få möjlighet att utveckla självkänsla, ambition och framtidstro utifrån sina egna villkor.

-  Vi skapar möjligheter för utsatta barn genom att fungera som fritidsledare, förebilder och stöttepelare i närområdet. Först när man bryr sig om sitt eget liv och ser ljust på framtiden kan man bryta negativa mönster och utanförskap. Det är häftigt att se att när man arbetar tillsammans mot ett gemensamt mål, människa till människa oavsett bakgrund, så sker underverk. Och Project Playground är vårt underverk, säger Sofia och Frida.

Utan en krona på fickan men med en gemensam övertygelse om kraften i att ge barn möjlighet till personlig och social utveckling, lyckades de med vad de flesta runt omkring dem sade var just en galen dröm. Följ grundarna Sofia och Fridas resa och se hur passion, envishet, tårar och en stor dos kärlek gjorde det omöjliga möjligt.

Is spare time and play an important part of giving exposed children and youth the possibility to a better future? That was the belief of Sofia Hellqvist and Frida Vesterberg when they founded Project Playground to help exposed children in one of the townships in South Africa. December 16th at 21 pm on the Swedish television channel TV3 a one hour documentary about the organization will be shown, in which the viewer get to follow the journey from a crazy dream to reality together with TV host Renée Nyberg.

South Africa is the richest country in Africa and a popular tourist destination, but also holds one of the highest inequality rates in the whole world and is home to millions of orphans. The socially and economically deprived area Langa is the oldest township in Western Cape, of which 50 % of the population is under 18 years old. Langa struggles with issues such as child-headed households, poverty, unemployment, gangsterism and drug and alcohol abuse. Domestic violence and sexual abuse is very common, leading to teenage pregnancies and dysfunctional families. Children growing up in Langa have to deal with problems and responsibilities daily – often on their own.  

During voluntary work in Ghana and South Africa, among other countries, Sofia Hellqvist and Frida Vesterberg noticed the inefficiency in many organizations. They wanted to make children’s rights a reality and to go from article to action they decided to start their own organization. The aim was to provide a safe haven where children and youth had the possibility to develop self-esteem, ambition and belief in the future own their own terms.

-  We create possibilities for exposed children through acting as recreation leaders and role models who offer support and love. Only when you care about your own life and expect a bright future are you able to break destructive patterns and exclusion. When working together toward a common goal, human to human regardless of social background, miracles happen. It’s amazing to see. And Project Playground is our miracle, Sofia och Frida says.

Without a penny in their pocket but with a strong belief in the power of providing children with possibilities to personal and social development, they succeeded with what most of the people around them ruled out as a crazy dream.
