Swedish Postcode Lottery supports implementation of MyChild System in Busoga Region

MyChild System has been implemented in 16 health centres in Mukono District of Uganda. The next step is implementation in Busoga region. The Swedish Postcode Lottery has granted support of 1.1 million Swedish kronor to fund the implementation in the first 30 health centres in Busoga.

Childhood mortality rates are high in Uganda and Africa in general. Major causes of child mortally are pneumonia, birth complications, diarrhoea, malaria and malnutrition. For some of the most deadly childhood diseases, such as pneumonia, diarrhoea, measles, polio, diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis vaccines are available and can protect children from early illnesses and deaths.

In Uganda, only 52% of the children are fully immunised and thereby protected against the most common deadly childhood diseases. The Swedish Postcode Lottery wants to help change this:

-  Given that only half of Ugandan children under five are vaccinated, we want to support Shifo and their efforts to improve child healthcare service delivery, says Josefin Carlring, General Manager of The Swedish Postcode Foundation

After successful implementation in the Mukono district, MyChild System is ready for scaling up in the Busoga region. The support from the Swedish Postcode Lottery pioneers this development and Josefine Carlring explains:

- Our project support will be used to introduce MyChild System (electronic medical records for child health) in 30 health centres in Busoga region, which will improve follow up of child vaccination services and thereby save lives.

The support of the Swedish Postcode Lottery is an important milestone. Rustam Nabiev, Director at Shifo:

-  We are very grateful to the Swedish Postcode Lottery. With their support of 1.1 million Swedish Kronor we enable children to be registered and appropriately followed up to receive lifesaving vaccines.

By enabling registration of each child and following up on their vaccination plan, Shifo wants to support long-term development in the region. Shifo works in close collaboration with the District Health Offices and nurses with the aim of reducing the number of unvaccinated children and drop-outs.
