Kista Hotel Apartments wins German design award

In October, it was announced that the wayfinding system in Kista Hotel Apartments was prized in the German Design Awards. It’s the second design award for the orientation system, as it was prized earlier this year in the European Design Awards.

The German Design council was founded on the initiative of the German parliament in 1953 with the purpose of representing new developments in the German and European design industry. The jury consists of 45 people from different design schools, museums, and architect- and design bureaus.

The Council jury’s statement on the design sounds;

“The creative use of various materials and colours and the attendant attention to detail make this orientation system something special indeed. An original design with an appealingly youthful touch.”

The statement resonates well with how Tobias Ottomar, Creative Director at design bureau Sunny at Sea, describes the thought behind the design.

“StayAt is the leading chain of apartment hotels in Sweden. They needed a guidance system and environmental graphics for a new hotel. With simple materials and focus on the details, we created a functional system that also projects the relaxed and playful feeling that StayAt communicates in. StayAt is all about that little extra and we wanted to get that through with a play on perspectives and hidden small details and messages so that the guests always have something new to discover.”

The German Design Awards was launched in 2012 and is one of the most well-respected design competitions in the world and is held in high regard well beyond professional circles.
