Load testing is a pretty obscure discipline - most developers understand what it is, but few people outside software development or -testing have even the faintest glimmer of a clue. Except, of course, people doing real, physical load testing. Maybe two years ago we had someone in India email us with a request to load test a rubber bumper for some large utility vehicle. They wanted to stress the bumper with 5,000 kg of force, the email said, and wondered if we could generate that kind of load.

Sad to say, there is no AWS API that can do this yet. Not that we know of at least. So we had to say "sorry, we only send a stream of electrons at your designated target, which by the way has to be connected to the Internet and able to speak HTTP". They must have concluded that we were not the ideal tool for the kind of stress testing they wanted to perform, because we never heard from them again (of course, Load Impact is a self-service type of tool so it is possible they gave it a try without telling us).

Naturally, we have since then been toying with the idea of creating a new product for this niche - an API that would allow you to exert variable amounts of physical pressure on any surface (at any angle) anywhere in the world, as long as that surface is freely accessible via an open, uncontrolled airspace. An army of quadcopters would be used to create the pressure, and you would rent the quadcopters by the hour, just like EC2 instances.
