It is now 12 years since ASP.NET was created. It has evolved into a multi-purpose end-all-be-all platform for hosting .NET code. With the birth of Node.js, a movement towards smaller, more efficient and platform-agnostic hosting environments have emerged. The pattern for consuming the web has also changed. The days when consumers waited for long-running transactional html-generating pages are long gone. Now, with single-page applications and smartphone apps, smaller and more frequent bursts of data are more common. To meet this pattern (and the NodeJs-movement) Microsoft had to re-invent their somewhat bloated web stack. ASP.NET vNext is Microsoft's new take on the web. The next version of ASP.NET has been redesigned from the ground up to be a lean and composable framework for building web and cloud applications, and it’s fully open source! At the same time, Microsoft is busy building their next major version of Visual Studio (14) that will ship with a new, much more tightly integrated compiler called Roslyn. We'll explore the opportunities/benefits of Roslyn, dive into examples and discuss how this will be a game changer for the IDE and the intelligent tooling space. With these new technologies combined, we get a sneak peek of the web development experience of tomorrow.
