Tretorn Eco Essentials Ghost Net jacket: a rain jacket made out of recycled fishing nets, have been selected by the Swedish Institute as one of three products to be present at the high-level United Nations Conference to Support the implementation of Sustainable Goal 14: to Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development.
The rain jacket is part of the Tretorn Eco Essentials Initiative and was first created together with the Scandinavian retailers Naturkompaniet and Partioaitta as a limited edition. The Ghost Net jacket will be made available for a global market by spring 2018.
"We developed a jacket from recycled fishing nets that not only reduces the environmental footprint but also helps to prevent and to communicate the problem of Ghost Nets which is such an important achievement "says Fredrik Ekström Head of Communications at Tretorn Europe and one of the initiators to the Ghost Net jacket and the Eco Essentials Initiative
Approximately 650.000 tons of fishing nets are believed to drift like debris in our oceans. Every two year the fishing fleets change nets, which are made from some of the best nylon in the world. Often nets get dumped in the sea as debris and since the high quality nylons decay slowly it can drift with wind and currents for years as ‘ghost nets’. Eventually they end up on a reef where they can knock out entire eco-systems. Ghost nets are considered among the greatest killer in our oceans. Approximately one million seabirds and one hundred thousand marine mammals and turtles die each year due to debris in our oceans.
