Laemmle föddes i Tyskland, 1867, när han var 17 övertalade han sin far att hans framtid fanns i Amerika. 1912 grundade han Universal tillsammans med fem andra producenter och den första filmen som distribuerades var Traffic in Souls - om vit slavhandel och prostitution av unga kvinnor.
