GENTLE REMINDER: WHY IS THE GDPR RELEVANT TO YOU IN SINGAPORE?

Why the EU General Data Protection Regulation(GDPR) is relevant to you in the APAC region

The EU General Data Protection Regulation or "GDPR" is a new data privacy law which is intended to harmonise and enhance data protection laws across the EU and came into force on Friday 25 May 2018. It is giving individuals significantly enhanced rights in relation to the use of their personal data and also imposes significant new obligations on organisations processing personal data, and significantly increased fines for breaking the rules.

A key change in the regulation is that is now has extra-jurisdictional effect in certain circumstances, meaning that it may affect businesses operating outside the EU and EEA.

Mr Alexander Shepherd from Bird & Bird ATMD law firm will give an overview of the GDPR and discuss how it may affect businesses in the APAC region.

Mr Shepherd is partner in Bird & Bird ATMD's global Tech & Comms Group and is based in Singapore. He advises extensively on data protection and privacy across the region. Read more about Mr Shepherd here.
