Panasonic wins the Overall Brand Champion at PR Awards 2017

In the annual PR Awards 2017, Panasonic came in tops by winning the coveted Overall Brand Champion award out of 300 brand finalists. This spectacular win also saw Panasonic receiving 5 gold awards in 6 different categories, including:

  • PR Awards Champion
  • Best Regional PR Campaign,
  • Best Use of Technology,
  • Best Use of Broadcast/ Video
  • Best B2B PR Campaign

The PR Awards is an annual event organized to bring together prominent brands and senior communications professionals across the region to recognize the best PR campaigns and celebrate achievements in the industry.

The highlight of Panasonic’s win was due to the “Panasonic Eclipse Live by Solar Power” event, where the judging panel was impressed by Panasonic’s live-streaming of the total solar eclipse drawn solely from solar energy. This provided a bold platform for Panasonic to showcase its solar technology to B2B and B2G target audiences and generate a global buzz.

On March 9 2016, Panasonic delivered a live broadcast documenting a 4-minnute, total solar eclipse from Ternate, an island in eastern Indonesia, powered only by solar power alone.

Using a device called the Power Supply Container (a stand-alone photovoltaic power package), Panasonic was able to convert solar energy from the sun using 12 Panasonic HIT® solar modules with high conversion efficiency which generated approximately 3kW of electricity by tapping renewable energy from the top of the container. This power was then stored in 24 built-in lead-acid storage batteries which powered a Panasonic LUMIX GH4 camera attached to a telescope which captured the spectacular moment.

This is the third time Panasonic is broadcasting a solar eclipse live. Unlike previous occasions where more time and effort had to be spent setting up HIT® solar modules, the new Power Supply Container’s portability allowed it to be assembled quickly with minimal construction work.

Prior to the live broadcast project in Ternate, Panasonic has developed and introduced the Power Supply Container to other parts of Indonesia. The first container was installed in July 2014 at the National Elementary School Karimunjawa 01 located on a remote island of Indonesia to improve the educational environment for students and teachers. Following its success, a second container was introduced in July 2015 at another elementary school in the mountainous region of West Java Province to enhance both study and water supply conditions.

As part of its global “100 Thousand Solar Lanterns Project”, Panasonic also donated 2,400 solar lanterns to 11 Humanitarian and Non-Governmental Organizations in Myanmar, bringing the total number donated to the country to 9,464. Launched in 2012, the Panasonic global “100 Thousand Solar Lanterns Project” targets to donate 100,000 units of the compact lighting devices to areas in emerging and developing countries with limited access to electricity by 2018, the company’s 100th year anniversary.

In a world where there are places with limited access to electricity, Panasonic hopes its energy sustainability projects will provide a better life, a better world for the less fortunate, and contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
