Exciting Line-up of Science and Technology Luminaries at Global Young Scientists Summit 2017

Singapore’s Global Young Scientists Summit 2017, organised by the National Research Foundation Singapore, brings together distinguished scientists, post-graduates and academics for five days of learning and mentoring.

The annual Global Young Scientists Summit (GYSS) will take place at the Singapore University of Technology and Design from 15 to 20 January 2017. The Summit welcomes over 250 of the world’s outstanding PhDs and post-doctoral fellows under the age of 35. They will have the privilege of interacting with 21 highly distinguished speakers through plenary lectures, panel discussions and interactive small group sessions. Well-respected in the science and technology community, these speakers comprise Nobel Laureates, Field Medallists, Millennium Technology Prize winners, and Turing Award winners.

New Speakers at GYSS

Speakers new to GYSS include Turing Award winners Dr Vinton Gray Cerf (2004), known as "one of the founding fathers of the Internet"; Professor Barbara Liskov (2008), a leading authority on computer language and system design; and Professor Butler Lampson (1992), recognised for his significant contributions to personal computing environments. Nobel Prize for Physics winner Professor Chen-Ning Yang (1957), the first Chinese Nobel Laureate, will also attend. With co-worker Professor Lee Tsung-Dao, who shared the 1957 Nobel Prize for Physics, showed that parity – a property that physicists had believed was always conserved, need not be. Together with Robert Mills, Yang also produced the Yang-Mills theory, which today lies at the heart of the Standard Model in physics.

The Summit also features two special guest speakers. They are Professor Jürgen Kluge, Chairman of the Lindau Foundation and Council Member for the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings, and Dr Juha Ylä-Jääski, President and CEO of Technology Academy of Finland.

The theme for GYSS 2017 is "Advancing Science, Creating Technologies for a Better World". The Summit covers a range of disciplines in science such as chemistry, physics, medicine, mathematics, to computer science and engineering.

Programme

Morning plenary lectures and panel sessions will run from Day 1 to 4, followed by informal small group sessions with speakers in the afternoon. On Day 3, participants will have the opportunity to visit local educational institutions and research centres to dialogue with fellow researchers to understand the local research, and innovation eco-system and the research opportunities in Singapore. Site visits on the last day showcases how Singapore overcomes its constraints through deployment and adaptation of science and innovation. This underscores the important role that science and innovation plays in Singapore’s economic and social development. The Summit also includes social and cultural activities that will expose GYSS participants to the sights, sounds and tastes that reflect Singapore’s multicultural society.

Members of the public will have the opportunity to hear from the Summit’s distinguished speakers by participating in free public lectures held at venues including the National University of Singapore, Singapore Management University, Science Centre Singapore, and National Library Building.

About the Global Young Scientists Summit

The Global Young Scientists Summit was started in 2013 with the vision of inspiring young scientists to follow their dreams by bringing together promising scientists from around the world to learn from distinguished scientists, and from each other. The Summit provides a platform for conversations on science and research, technology innovation and society, and solutions to global challenges. Visit www.gyss-one-north.sg for more information.
