The Making of Heroes: The Bone Marrow Donor Programme (BMDP) Partners with the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) to help Save Lives

Singapore, 21 February 2013: Singapore’s Bone Marrow Donor Programme (BMDP) kicks off the Court’s Young Lions S-League Football season with a simple appeal – it only takes 2 minutes of your own time to save someone’s life. Partnering with the Football Association of Singapore (FAS), the partners have produced a 60-second video clip featuring several of the Courts’ Young Lions players who are all registered  Bone Marrow Donors, appealing to the public to do the same.

The partnership will kick off at the first Courts Young Lions game of the season (Jalan Besar Stadium, Sunday 23 February 2014), and subsequently the partnership video will be played twice at every Singapore League match, prior to the match and at break time. It features key players in action, with sobering statistics on the blood cancers and diseases in Singapore.

The players, all enthusiastic supporters of the BMDP, hope the FAS video campaign will increase both the awareness and the number of volunteer sign-ups onto the BMDP register.  The recent loss of a former S-League and national team player Adrian Dhanaraj in September 2013 to Hodgkin’s lymphoma makes bone marrow donation a topic quite close to the heart for these young players, and partnering with the BMDP gives them the opportunity to help save the life of others with similar diagnoses.

Jane Prior, BMDP President, states “We are thrilled to have this collaboration with the Courts Young Lions as they represent the diversity of Singapore and they have each demonstrated a willingness and commitment to go beyond themselves and support our life-saving mission.”

The BMDP is responsible for building and managing Singapore’s only Registry of Bone Marrow Donors. After celebrating their 20th anniversary in 2013, the ambitious goal of recruiting 20,000 new donors over the next 3 years was established to focus on building the Registry.  Their partnership with FAS will go a long way in helping achieve this goal.

About the BMDP

Since 1993 the Bone Marrow Donor Programme (BMDP) has been helping leukaemia patients and those with other blood disorders reclaim their lives through finding them a matching bone marrow donor. Today the BMDP has 55,000 donors on the register and has found a match for almost 500 patients. In Singapore’s highly complex and integrated community, it is absolutely critical to expand the local register and we plan to recruit 20,000 new donors in the next three years.
