Press release -

SMRT to Implement Phase 2 of Sleeper Replacement Works on North-South Line between Admiralty and Jurong East Stations from 2 November 2014 to end March 2015

To facilitate the replacement of 188,000 sleepers across its 131km rail network, SMRT will be ending train services at selected North-South Line MRT stations 30 minutes earlier, at 12.30am on Sunday to Thursday nights* from 2 November 2014 to end March 2015 (except for eve of public holidays). Phase Two of the Sleeper Replacement Programme involves nine stations - Admiralty, Woodlands, Marsiling, Kranji, Yew Tee, Choa Chu Kang, Bukit Gombak, Bukit Batok and Jurong East, and they account for more than 47,000 sleepers along the North-South Line which need to be replaced.

In the first phase of the project, SMRT closed several stations half an hour earlier to allow our engineers to replace sleepers along the Ang Mo Kio to Sembawang stretch, at a faster rate. As of 28 September 2014, 59% of the sleepers along the North-South Line have been replaced and we are on track to complete the sleeper replacement project across the North-South-East-West Lines by 2016. SMRT is pleased to announce that the early closure of stations from Ang Mo Kio to Sembawang will be lifted from 1 November 2014.

SMRT seeks the support, patience and understanding of commuters. The early closure will help enhance system reliability and offer smoother rides. Thirty minute-closures on weekday nights will enable SMRT to deploy machinery more efficiently to accelerate replacement works. It will also contribute to quicker implementation of other key projects such as re-signalling and third rail replacement.

From 2 November onwards (start of Phase Two), commuters who board trains after 11.15pm on the North-South Line are advised to plan their journey and consider alternative transport arrangements, such as bus services, to get to their final destination. This includes north-bound train headed towards Jurong East as well as those on the south-bound trains headed towards Ang Mo Kio. Commuters may wish to note that trains departing from Marina Bay will turn around at Admiralty station, and that East-West Line train services at Jurong East will operate on their normal schedules. To help plan their journeys, commuters may refer to the Land Transport Authority’s Public Transport@SG site, http://www.publictransport.sg.

The sleeper replacement schedule is updated regularly on SMRT’s corporate website at: http://www.smrt.com.sg/SMRTMe/ServiceEnhancements/CurrentUpcomingProjects.aspx

*Note: Sunday night extends to pre-dawn Monday while Thursday night extends to pre-dawn Friday
