About Sony Design

Sony has a deeply engrained design heritage across the business to develop products that not only have the very latest technologies but are also designed beautifully. Iconic products developed such as WALKMAN, Cyber-shot, PlayStation, VAIO and BRAVIA demonstrate Sony’s passion for design.

Since the Design Centre was founded in Tokyo in 1961, designers at Sony have strived to develop innovative products under the philosophy of ‘building high-performance, easy-to-use and beautiful products with a distinctive Sony flair’.

Over the years and in line with the overall Sony strategy, Design at Sony developed globally and today designers of various nationalities and backgrounds are playing active roles in Sony Design from locations in the US, UK, Singapore and China. While these designers are asked to reflect regional preferences and express local values through design in their respective fields, they also play an important role in strengthening Sony’s competitiveness and the Sony brand — a pursuit in which all designers are involved, regardless of region.

Established in 1980 in London, the Design Centre for Europe was the first dedicated design centre to be created by a consumer electronics brand that could act as an antenna for European design trends and create localised products. Today, Design Centre Europe not only works specifically for the European market creating highly original products such as the ‘picture frame’ TV, but also works on global design concepts in collaboration with the Tokyo and worldwide design centres.

Over the decades, Sony Design has collected a variety of prestigious honours and awards for its products including Red Dot, iF design and the CES Innovations Design and Engineering Award.
