European Advanced Camera of the year 2013-2014: SLT-A99

Sony’s flagship camera, the Alpha SLT-A99, provides the demanding photographer with excellent image quality and a host of innovative features through its use of a full frame sensor and its SLT electronic viewfinder system. The camera’s Exmor CMOS sensor features 24.3 million pixels which, via the BIONZ image processor, can output 14-bit raw files at a rate of six frames per second, while the camera’s unique dual phase detection AF system is designed to keep up with fast moving subjects. Sophisticated video controls and high quality recording modes make this an excellent choice for shooting moving images too. Sony has used magnesium alloy to create a professional-build body, and has incorporated a very high-resolution vari-angle 3-inch LCD panel that allows shooting from almost any angle.

European Compact Camera of the year 2013-2014: DSC-HX50 / HX50V

Following the tradition of this category’s winner from the 2012-2013 EISA awards, the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX20, the HX50 is the world's smallest compact camera with a 30x zoom lens - stretching the limits of the compact zoom segment even more. Equipped with a Sony G-class lens, the DSC-HX50 offers a great balance of worry-free point-and-shoot photography and high-level manual control and customisation. The HX50V also includes GPS to record the exact location where a picture was taken. Other features, like the 20.4MP Exmor R CMOS sensor, the highly effective optical stabilisation, the 1080p AVCHD video and the dedicated exposure compensation dial, will be very much appreciated by photographers of all levels.

EUROPEAN TV of the year 2013-2014: Sony BRAVIA KDL-55W905A

With the KDL-55W905A, Sony has unleashed its new Triluminos LED display and a second generation of its processing engine X-Reality Pro. The result is a faultless picture performance with vibrant, lifelike colours and superb motion clarity that suits sports, movies and games, while the long-duct speaker system delivers excellent audio, too. A new, fast user interface makes the TV easy to operate, as do features like the NFC enabled remote and TV SideView app. A thin aluminium bezel and eye-catching stand give the KDL-55W905A its distinctive ‘Sense of Quartz’ look. An excellent choice for the demanding consumer.

European HT Receiver of the year 2013-2014: Sony STR-DA5800ES

Sony’s flagship receiver sports a heavyweight design and build but brings finesse to its multichannel performance ensuring that movie soundtracks and music alike are delivered with vivid detail and bags of energy. The 9.2-channel STR-DA5800ES is also feature packed, offering nine HDMI inputs and three outputs, an asynchronous USB input, built-in network switching and, uniquely for an AVR, video-on-demand courtesy of the Sony Entertainment Network. Powerful on-board audio processing enables centre channel Lift Up and Virtual Height functionality to ease installation, while media playback includes support for 192kHz/24-bit FLAC and WAV files. Add in the gorgeous and intuitive graphic user interface and effective auto-calibration regime and the result is an inspired new addition to Sony’s home cinema line-up.

European Tablet of the year 2013-2014: Xperia Tablet Z

It might be slim but it's certainly not feeble! One of the thinnest tablets in the market, the Sony Xperia Tablet Z comes with rugged protection to make it water-and-dust resistant. Reportedly, it remains functional after being one meter underwater for up to 30 minutes. On the inside the Tablet Z boasts a fast quad-core processor, operating at 1.5 GHz with 2GB of RAM, running the Android 4.1.3 operating system. The 10.1-inch display features a resolution of 1920x1200 pixels, resulting in a 224 ppi pixel density. Versions with 16GB or 32GB built-in memory are available and a MicroSD slot can be used to further expand the storage capacity. With Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct, Miracast, Bluetooth, NFC and 4G LTE all the latest communication technologies are on board, as well. There are two cameras, the rear-mounted one of which shoots still pictures with up to 8.1megapixels using a CMOS Exmor R sensor, and also records Full HD video. Thanks to the integrated infrared port, the Xperia Tablet Z can also be turned into a remote control for your home entertainment system. Available in black or white finishes, the Sony Xperia Tablet Z is the perfect choice for anyone seeking a combination of unique style and technology.
