Awareness and responsibility at the largest Formex in history

Awareness and responsibility formed the cornerstones of the Formex interior design and gift fair, which ended last Saturday at Stockholmsmässan. This fall’s event was the biggest ever, with around 990exhibitors showing off their products over an area of a little more than 33,000 sq. m. Just over 22,000 visitors passed through the convention center’s doors.

This fall’s trend theme, Nordic Me, focused on awareness; how we want to live and how we make our choices. It addressed two ideas - caring for ourselves and the world around us, and notions of origin and content.

“For many years now, the concepts of sustainability and responsibility have been taking an increasing foothold in the public consciousness, but now they’ve made a major breakthrough. You could see evidence of them everywhere at the fair, regardless of the product area. What is clear is that people are making conscious choices in terms of materials, questioning processes and being more demanding regarding sustainability. It’s a hygiene factor and an absolute must for many. The fair was also the biggest ever, with a greater breadth and depth than any of its previous incarnations. We’ve also given a little extra impetus and space to our young designers and start-ups,” says Christina Olsson, Project Manager for Formex.

Nick Ross, winner of the Formex Nova Design Award, which is awarded to a young designer working in the Nordic region, also touched on the theme. Ross works methodically with materials and forms, with a strong feel for interpretation, often using historical references as a source of inspiration.
Many of the products nominated for the Formex Formidable Award, which recognizes good design, had also adopted a sustainability perspective, combining the use of traditional methods and materials to produce creations that are a nexus of the historical and the contemporary.

The high level of interest shown by visitors was reflected by the well-attended lectures, where many presentations focused on the themes of sustainability, responsibility and origin.

The next Formex will take place on 18-21 January 2017 at Stockholmsmässan.
