Unique wearables - hybrids of fashion and technology - on display at Formex

Several of Sweden’s leading fashion designers joined forces with several of the world’s leading digital developers and programmers and created global innovations within the area of wearables, fashion with a built-in technological function. The result of this unique collaboration will be on display at the Formex interior and design fair, which will be held August 24-27.

Earlier this year, a Fashion Hackathon was arranged with the aim of creating a new hybrid industry between fashion and technology and solving social or everyday problems by creating the next generation’s wearables.

“The ‘wearable’ sector has enormous potential, and clothing in the future may do many of the functions that are currently handled via our phones. Today, however, wearables are mainly focused on biometric data that measures physical performance. With this initiative, we want to bring together fashion designers and digital developers in order to create innovations together that are more fashion-oriented and encompass more everyday functions than what is currently on the market,” says Elin Frendberg, CEO, Swedish Fashion Council, one of the arrangers of the Fashion Hackathon.

The following fashion brands joined forces withBontouch (digital design/programming), Future Fashion (smart materials), Neue Labs (software) and KTH (programming and creative ideas) to create six unique prototypes:

H&M: A connected garment that brings an artist or athlete together with his/her audience. A garment that can give feedback or a pep talk from the audience before/during or after an event/performance and send a Thank You back. Clapapp

Lazoschmidl: Pants that are linked to a dating site (Tinder or Grindr) and give an electric shot to the wearer’s backside when someone shows interest.

De Moy: A garment to wear on the beach that tells the wearer when his/her child enters the water thanks to an ankle band on the child.

Uniforms for the Dedicated: A suit with printed light under the lapel, sleeves or cuffs that is invisible during the day but can be rolled up in the dark to offer greater traffic safety for cyclists and pedestrians. Nightlight

Reschia: Shoes that can guide the wearer, e.g. for the vision-impaired, smart fabric that regulates temperature, etc.

Naim Josefi: A cap that regulates temperature, raises the temperature when cold and lowers it when warm.
