ZÜBLIN awarded 2019 German Steel Construction Industry Engineering Prize

  • Award for building construction project adidas ARENA – World of Sports presented to Züblin Stahlbau GmbH
  • Jury: prize awarded for innovative engineering and close collaboration among all project participants

Züblin Stahlbau GmbH, together with its consortium partner stahl + verbundbau gmbh and the engineering office of Werner Sobek Stuttgart AG, was awarded the 2019 German Steel Construction Industry Engineering Prize in the category of Building Construction. The prize for the adidas ARENA – World of Sports was presented at the BAU trade fair in Munich by the German steel construction industry association bauforumstahl e. V.

The jury justified its decision by highlighting the remarkable architectural and engineering features of the building, declaring the adidas ARENA to be an outstanding example for the harmony of sophisticated architecture and structural engineering. Many novel developments in steel and composite construction were put into practice and convincingly resolved through the application of innovative engineering.

The jury also pointed out that the realisation of the ambitious building construction project required the close cooperation among the engineering office, construction companies and certification boards. A prerequisite for the integrated approach was the close interaction of the various work stages from design to construction.

Optimisation through value engineering
Another reason for the award was the use of value engineering. This method helps to reduce the engineering costs without affecting the quality or functions of the building. The value engineering applied during the adidas ARENA project included the spectacular assembly concept involving a hydraulic hub of preassembled floors weighing about 12,500 t. The structure was rested on a set of jacks as the 67 V-shaped composite supports were built underneath. The jury also praised the use of value engineering for the fire safety measures in the floors and ceilings as well as the reduction of manufacturing and assembly tolerances in the steel construction.

Work performed by ZÜBLIN Stahlbau
The building’s ground plan measures 113 m x 138 m with a height of 27.5 m. The upper storeys rest on 67 slender V-shaped supports up to 17 m tall to create an open and light sensation that is suggestive of the dynamics in sports. The three office floors with a gross floor area of about 52,000 m² offer flexible, innovative and modern workspaces for about 2,000 employees.

The steel construction works were overseen by Züblin Stahlbau GmbH, which also had overall responsibility of the production and assembly, the construction design, the certification of the assembly procedures for preassembly, and the hydraulic hub.
