ZÜBLIN Timber building national park visitor centre in Black Forest

Skywalk and inclined viewing tower create architectural eyecatcher
ZÜBLIN Timber has been chosen to build the new visitor and information centre for the Black Forest National Park. The wood architectural sculpture is based on a design by the architects sturm und wartzeck. Construction on the ensemble of timber-built structures at Ruhestein pass (elev.: 915 m) will begin in June 2018 and will last until the spring of 2019. Overall completion of the new visitor centre is scheduled for 2020. The ZÜBLIN project has a contract value of approximately € 5.5. million.
As an architectural flagship for the national park, the visitor centre was designed to blend into its surroundings by recreating a natural forest situation using mainly local timber products, especially silver fir from the nearby region. The eight separate elongated structures, each up to 65 m in length, create the image of a pile of fallen trees as can be found in an unspoilt forest setting. The one-to-two storey buildings are vertically and horizontally offset in a criss-cross pattern at a slight incline. The visual highlight of the ensemble is the open skywalk connecting the visitor centre with a 35 m tall viewing tower inclined at a 15-degree angle that offers visitors a one-of-a-kind view over the fir and spruce forest.
From the shop drawings to the installation planning all the way to production and assembly, ZÜBLIN Timber is handling all glulam and cross laminated timber works, the trusses of BauBuch veneer lumber with a long span of more than 60 m, all steel connections as well as the construction of the viewing tower using steel trusses.
The 3,000 m² new building will not only serve as an information centre for park visitors but will also house the park administration offices. The spatial concept includes a 1,000 m² interactive permanent exhibition space, areas for temporary exhibitions and presentations, education rooms, a bistro and a cinema to make the national park centre an attractive destination.
