ZÜBLIN with full order books and high capacity utilisation in 2019

  • Construction output rises to new high of € 4.6 billion in 2019
  • Order backlog (around € 6.5 billion) and volume of new orders (around € 4.6 billion) remain at high level in 2019

Ed. Züblin AG of Stuttgart, the German market leader in building construction and civil engineering, successfully completed numerous demanding projects in the past 2019 financial year and could be pleased about full order books and high capacity utilization. The company grew its construction output in 2019 by a solid 4 % from approximately € 4.4 billion to approximately € 4.6 billion. Some 76 % of this figure was attributable to Germany, with 24 % coming from other European and non-European countries.

The volume of new orders, at approximately € 4.6 billion, remained at the very high level of the previous year. Orders with a total value of about € 3.7 billion were added to the books in Germany in 2019, including the construction of the new 140 m high EDGE East Side Berlin being, built under the teamconcept partnering model, as well as the connection of the new Stuttgart-Ulm railway line to the Stuttgart Airport and the modernisation of the main university building in Bielefeld. The most important new orders abroad included two orders for the El Teniente mine project in Chile and another order in Doha, Qatar, for the design and build of a wastewater pumping station.

The order backlog at the end of the year remained high at approximately € 6.5 billion. The figure attributable to Germany increased by approximately 4 %, whereas the foreign backlog decreased by approximately 9 %.

On the reporting date of 31 December 2019, the ZÜBLIN Group had a total of 14,755 employees, 697 more than at the same time in the previous year. The company had 8,402 employees in Germany and 6,353 abroad.

In view of the current situation, ZÜBLIN board member Dr. Alexander Tesche cannot venture a forecast for the ongoing financial year: “Although our construction sites in Germany have so far not had any serious losses as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, a negative impact will still be felt – not only in the current year, for example due to the country-specific lockdowns and mandatory halt to construction at some of our foreign projects, but also in the long term. We are already seeing fewer projects on the market as well as delays with upcoming orders – also in Germany.”
